So, do any of you play instruments? How well? What kind of instrument have you got (eg. What kind of violin have you got?)
Would you like to play instruments? Wish you were better? Can you offer any advice?
I'll start: I play guitar, and have done for about 6 years. In the last year or so I've switched from electric to acoustic, finding I enjoy the sound and style a lot more. I'm still a beginner, I guess. I don't practice often. I also play keyboard, and I'm wanting to self-teach myself music theory when I can find the time. I don't play keyboard very well either. Not being able to read sheet music very well doesn't help! But I'm working on it. I'd love to get lessons in both guitar and keyboard, but y'know, money and all that. Someday though! If anyone wants any tutorials or tabs or help with guitars, I'll always reply!

I don't play any instruments, but I use a DAW for electronic music, so that sorta counts I guess, been at it for just under a year. Always wanted to pick up guitar though, I was considering getting one, but starting anything new is always a task, how long did it take you to become somewhat confident with it?

Well, I really just kept my guitar near my computer, or near wherever I spent a lot of time on the laptop. I'd just pick it up and noodle around on it, play the odd tab or so, until one day I realised I was pretty confident with what I was doing. I'm definitely improving, and learning how to fingerpick! I guess it was about a year or so of very loose, random practice. If I'd have focused on it and practiced 20 minutes a day for six months, I'd be a lot better than I am now!

Well that doesn't sound so bad! I was expecting a couple of years, but yeah that's cool, I believe I shall get a guitar around Christmas and it shall be my new years resolution to actually practice it! although I'm usually very bad at keeping those things.

www.amazon.co.uk/Collins-Need-Know-David-Harrison/dp/0007190883This is a pretty decent book for getting to grips with the basics. After that I'd recommend teaching yourself to read sheet music in relation to guitars. The trouble with tabs is their either mostly for electric guitar and hard, or very easy. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. It also doesn't really teach you to understand the music. This is the one thing that I've learned over the years. Tabs are great to start with or if you want to learn a specific song, but you'll reach a point when you'll be like, "Oh. This is boring." and then you'll want to move on to learning the sheet music. Once I've mastered the sheet music I'm going to learn some spanish guitar techniques!

Awesome I'll check it out, and spanish guitar sounds fun, I want to learn reggae techniques myself, well after the basics of course, I'm not sure how hard it will be but I just love the sound

Well, I play French Horn, Trumpet, Mellophone, basically high brass instruments, but I also tinker around on Piano a bit. Don't know if anyone here is a brass player, but they are really fun instruments to play.

I'm a violinist!
I should play more often, but I get embarrassed about my housemates hearing me...
I was considering going professional for a while, but I'm very rusty these days.

Alright, another brass player :3 I've always wanted to learn trombone as well. It seems fun to play, at least that's what I get from watching my friends play it.
